FAQs

Generally speaking you can think of Percutane as heat therapy (like Deep Heat, but more effective!) Use Percutane for chronic (long term) issues relating to muscle aches and joint stiffness. Percutane will increase circulation to warm up and activate sore and aching muscles and joints to help get you moving. Percutane is also ideal for use before exercise to increase circulation and get blood flowing to muscles and joints.

Traumitane is ideal for use as a first response for acute injuries and inflammation. Think of it more like applying ice to an injury to reduce the effects of inflammation (swelling, redness and bruising) relieving discomfort and promoting faster recovery. Traumitane is ideal for post-exercise application to promote faster recovery. Think of Traumitane like Anti-flamme but more effective!

Yes - Percutane and Traumitane can be used together by applying Percutane in the morning and then applying Traumitane in the afternoons/evenings. In this way, the formulas work together to simulate hot and cold therapy, the benefits of which are well known to the medical community and high performance athletes.

Topical creams are very effective at getting directly to the source of the issue as they can be applied directly to the site in question. Percutane and Traumitane have been specially formulated to penetrate quickly through the dermal layer to ensure the active ingredients are absorbed directly into the affected areas as opposed to sitting on the surface of the skin like many other topical products.

Topical medication offers several advantages over oral medications and NSAIDs. They deliver their message directly to inflamed tissue without affecting the body in general.

Oral and topical pain medication, or analgesics, both block the effects of chemicals called prostaglandins that allow neurons to transmit pain signals to the brain. The primary difference between these two classes of medication is that oral medication affects the entire body’s sensitivity to pain, while topical medication only relieves pain in a specific area of the body. The localized effect of topical medication makes it a safer method of pain relief than swallowing pills. They are more effective than oral medication for treating painful joints that are just below the skin’s surface, especially the knees and elbows and nerves.

No - Oral medication such as ibuprofen and other NSAIDs must pass through your digestive tract and circulatory system before it can take effect, as opposed to topical cream. Oral medication can therefore cause gastric upset and other side effects in some people.

The general effect of oral medication means that these drugs often become less effective over time due to the body’s tendency to compensate for their effects. Pills that contain opiates also pose significant long-term health risks in the long term since they can be addictive, and are therefore prone to misuse.

The superhero ingredient of Percutane is Capsaicin which is a derivative of hot chillies. Different people react in different ways to chili heat in their food and the same is true of topical absorption. If you find the Percutane heat too warm for you, apply milk to the area with a paper towel. In the same way that drinking a glass of milk reduces the burn in your mouth from a hot curry, the protein in milk (casein) breaks down the capsaicin molecules to reduce the heat on your skin. Note - a hot shower, bath or spa or sauna should be avoided as these situations will reactivate the Capsaicin in Percutane, generating more heat.

Neither Percutane or Traumitane should be used on abrasions, cuts, broken, inflamed or sensitive skin or sensitive areas such as eyes, lips, and genital areas. Make sure you wash your hands well after application with soap and water to avoid accidentally transferring Percutane to any sensitive areas.

Yes - Percutane and Traumitane have been formulated to absorb quickly through the skin and do not leave a greasy film on the surface of the skin like other topical creams tend to.

Yes - Percutane and Traumitane are both recommended by medical professionals including GPs and Osteopaths. Watch Dr Anton Wiles reviewing Traumitane

Five reasons to choose Percutane over Deep Heat

1. Deeper heat -  Percutane contains capsaicin derived from chillies. Percutane has been formulated to ensure the Capsaicin penetrates through the dermal layer to deliver a deeper heat to the underlying affected area rather than just sitting on the skin.

2. Scientifically proven pain relief - Capsaicin is scientifically proven to reduce pain by inhibiting 'substance P’, a neurotransmitter that sends signals to the brain.

3. Mobilisation of stiff joints and sore muscles - application before activity activates joints, tendons and muscles by increasing blood flow, helping to get you moving, improve training, speed-up recovery and prevent injury.

4. Longer lasting relief - Percutane continues to reactivate over a 24 hour period meaning that it works harder for longer.

5. Developed and manufactured in New Zealand-Percutane has been trusted by kiwis for over 20 years!

Five reasons to choose Traumitane over Anti-flamme

1. Traumitane delivers rapid Cooling - The extra-strength Arnica and Menthol combine to provide a rapid & lasting cooling effect to soothe aching muscles and joints.

2. Faster recovery - the cooling action of Traumitane simulates ice pack therapy which helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, reduce muscle spasms and speed up recovery from injury and exercise.

3. Promotes repair - Traumitane contains transdermal Glucosamine for joint repair. Clinical studies have proven that Glucosamine helps reverse joint degradation and aids cartilage repair.

4. Traumitane contains scientifically proven active ingredients including glucosamine, extra strength arnica and menthol which combine to make a powerful clinical strength formulation.

Percutane is better for chronic pain as it contains capsaicin which is scientifically proven to reduce pain by inhibiting 'substance P’, a neurotransmitter that sends signals to the brain.

Capsaicin works by binding to a receptor in the cell wall of neve endings and de-sensitising the nerves to pain.

Capsaicin creams such as Percutane are an effective treatment for a variety of pain syndromes, from minor muscle or joint aches to those that are very difficult to treat, such as arthritis and neuropathic pain.

Both Percutane and Traumitane contain extra strength arnica to support inflammation.

Traumitane also has a rapid and powerful cooling action which, like an ice pack, helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, reduce muscle spasms and speed up recovery from injury and exercise.

Traumitane is idea for for tissue injuries and is recommended by health professionals including GP, Dr Anton Wiles.

For relief from arthritis it is important that you use Percutane regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, we recommend you use it at the same time every day - in the mornings.

Percutane may not work immediately to relieve pain. Because it works by depleting a neurotransmitter that sends pain signals to the brain, it may sometimes take a little while (up to a month) to work. Most people report getting relief from arthritis pain over the course of a week after starting to use Percutane.
